Peggy Thoeny

November 10, 1933—November 9, 2018

Peggy A. Thoeny peacefully passed away surrounded by family on November 9, 2018. She was 84. Peggy was born November 10, 1933 in Portland, Oregon to Peter and Inez Binn, and grew up in Milwaukie, Oregon.

Peggy married her high school sweetheart George F. Thoeny and they were married for 62 years. In 1952 they moved to Woodland, Washington, where they farmed carrots, vegetables, berries and grass seed, and raised their family. Along with handling all the finances and being, as her husband George playfully claimed “the brains of the operation” for the farm, they also owned and operated a farm market and greenhouse called Mom’s Vegetable Garden that started from Peggy’s garden by her house.

Later in life, Peggy also served on Cowlitz County Integrated Landscape Management Committee and was also a farmer advisor on the Pacific Flyway Dusky Goose Subcommittee. She also enjoyed being a member of the Friends of Woodland Community Library and being “Grandma Peggy” to hundreds of children at Mogul Busters Ski School, feeding them hot cocoa and homemade cookies to warm them up after ski lessons. In her spare time, she was a master pianist, avid book reader, enjoyed sewing, knitting and listening to classical music.

Peggy was proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was very loving and active in their lives and activities.

She will be remembered for her generosity, intelligence, and determination. She was preceded in death by her husband George F. Thoeny, twin infant daughters Caroline and Lynette Thoeny, and brother Theodore Binn. She is survived by her sister Georgia Haley; sons George (Cindy) Thoeny and Ted (Marlene) Thoeny; daughters Sharon (Richard) Dolan and Erin Thoeny; grandchildren Jeff (Jessica) Thoeny, Adam Thoeny, Stephanie (Joel) Dobler, Jill (Francisco) Thoeny-Patiz, David (Bridget) Dolan, and Kellie (Justin) Tooley, and 7 great-grandchildren.

A graveside memorial will be held in the spring at the Kerns-Bozorth Cemetery in Woodland. Memorials can be made to Friends of Woodland Community Library, PO Box 894, Woodland WA 98674.
