Orvel F. Thompson, 84, of Longview died at home Sept. 28, 2017.
He was born March 8, 1933, in Newcastle, Wyo., to Fayette and Faye Irene Thompson. Orvel attended grade school in Moorcroft, Wyo., and finished his education in Longview after the family moved here in 1945. Orvel graduated from R.A. Long high School in 1951 and was a member of FFA, raising registered hogs and a purebred Jersey heifer, winning many awards.
He married and divorced at a young age and remained single the rest of his life. He served four years each in the Navy and the Air Force. He was honorably discharged in 1963 and went to work for the US Postal Service, retiring in 1988. Orvel was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
He spent his retirement traveling with his brother, George and his wife to Arizona, Montana and Alaska. Orvel enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and sightseeing. In his later years he enjoyed reading and making latch hook rugs.
Orvel was a simple, quiet man, who didn’t place much value in material things, but was a friendly, generous, helpful person who will be missed by his family and friends.
Orvel was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Norval as an infant, George and Edward; and a sister, Betty.
He is survived by a sister, Letha Bishop of Longview; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He will be laid to rest in the family plot in Kalispell, Mont., during a private service.
