March 26, 1933 — March 2, 2019
Melvin Thorstenson peacefully entered into The Father’s arms March 2, 2019, at the Hospice Care Center.
He was born March 26, 1933, in Des Moines, Iowa, the eldest of four children, born to loving parents Lane and Alberta Thorstenson. Mel grew up in The Dalles, Ore. He joined the Army’s 82nd Airborne, after being honorably discharged Mel returned to The Dalles and met the love of his life, Marlene. After a whirlwind romance they married and quickly grew their family to five, with sons Bradley, Gary and David.
In 1967 they started a pest control business in Kelso. Mel worked tirelessly going door-to-door churning up business, at times working over 80 hours a week. Marlene answered phones, handled the finances, and raised the three boys. Their teamwork paid off. They were very proud of the business they grew with hard work, honesty and integrity. In 1992 they retired selling the business to son Brad and longtime family friend and employee Dwayne Clement.
Mel had a huge heart. He was very giving and loving. He and his son Gary were special buddies. He was always quick to assist with a project, helping Brad to build his home, barn, and fences. He was also a wonderful Grandpa, watching the grandchildren and feeding them (mainly sweets and bacon), taking them rock hunting, and up to get the much-desired fireworks at the Indian Reservation. He and his wife Marlene enjoyed some memorable travel, and they both enjoyed bantering about politics. She was absolutely the love of his life and his passing was due to a broken heart, as she had passed a few months earlier. Also preceding him in death were his parents; his beloved son, David Thorstenson; and a brother, Don.
He is survived by his sons, Brad Thorstenson (Patti) and Gary Thorstenson; five grandchildren, Brandon Thorstenson (Morgan), Kayla Morris (Jason), Jessica Thorstenson, Zachary Thorstenson (Alexis), and Ryan Thorstenson (Kindra); six great-grandchildren, Eden, Tessa and Liam Morris, and Lauren, Lark and Gavin Thorstenson. Mel will be dearly missed by family and loved-ones.
A private family gathering with be held to scatter Mel’s ashes.
