Margaret L. Appleby

Feb. 17, 1948 — Feb. 5, 2018

Margaret Louise Appleby, 69, a lifelong resident of Rainier, passed away peacefully at home Feb. 5, 2018.

She was born Feb. 17, 1948, in Longview, to James and Nellie Swanson. She graduated from Rainier Union High School and married Alfred “Bud” Appleby. They had two children and later divorced.

“Mammy” gave birth to her two children, son Jim and daughter Kristi. She spent endless hours taking them to numerous sporting events, school functions, fairs and other activities. She welcomed two grandchildren, Hannah and Nicholas Rinck into her world, and dearly loved spending time with them. Margaret’s two greatest passions in life were taking care of her animals and competing and winning. She raised cattle, rabbits, chickens, Nubian dairy goats, and her personal favorite, South African Boer goats. Her “show” goats were widely known as some of the best in the Northwest. Her constant theme was “We go out there to win. Anyone can come in second place, but there is only one winner.” She loved her animals, and always strived to have the best ones.

Margaret was always very kind to children. She loved helping them through her photography skills, or teaching the proper way to take care of and show their livestock. She would later judge many of these same kids at local contests and fairs. Another passion of Margaret’s was scrapbooking the thousands of photos she had taken of her grandchildren. She spent countless hours putting together beautiful memorabilia of her grandchildren, to show off to the world. There wasn’t a moment of Hannah and Nicholas’ life that was not documented in those scrapbooks.

Margaret is survived by her children, Jim Appleby and Kristi Rinck (Steve); and her grandchildren, Hannah and Nicholas Rinck.

A funeral service is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Rainier Community Church of God with Pastor Steve Berry officiating. Groulx Family Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
