Lon Ylonen

Jan. 30, 1955 — Dec. 29, 2018

Lon passed away at his home after a year-long battle with leukemia.

Lon was born in Longview, to Iva and Jerry Ylonen. He graduated from Kelso High School in 1973, played football and participated in track.

His longshore career began in 1973 and ended with his retirement in 2017. He was a proud Local 21 Union member with over 25 years as a steady crane operator.

He enjoyed NASCAR and was a big Jeff Gordon fan. Lon was a life-long hunter and proud of his Finnish heritage. He enjoyed the yearly tradition of setting up Finn Elk Camp in the Grays River area; and in the spring, Finn Trout Camp at Swift Creek.

Lon is survived by his loving, long-time companion, Annette Miller; his mother, Iva Nurmi; a brother, J.P. (Susan); a sister, Jody Nurmi and her children, Connor and Mariah; a son, Gregory Collins (Daisy); two grandchildren, Colvin and Emery; and five stepgrandchildren.

Lon was preceded in death by his father, Jerry; his stepfather and mentor, Don Nurmi; and his faithful dog, Secret.

Lon was a humble man. We will forever miss his sharp wit and his uncanny ability to make us laugh.

A service is planned for noon Saturday at Steel Chapel, 5050 Mt. Solo Road, in Longview.
