May 30, 1947—Oct. 26, 2019

Laura Jean (Peterson) Mahnke, age 72, child of God, passed away Oct. 26, 2019, due to complications from gall bladder cancer. Laura was born in St. Paul, MN, on May 30, 1947, to Arne G. and Maurine (Moldestad) Peterson. She had three siblings, Nancy Kynaston, Judy Keever and brother David, in a joy-filled family. There was always a room at home for visitors who were welcomed with Maurine’s baking. The Peterson family moved to the west coast in 1956, settling in Longview. Laura graduated from Mark Morris High School in 1965. She attended Lower Columbia College and then made a masterful decision and married Hal Mahnke on Oct. 16, 1966.

Laura and Hal started their married life in Portsmouth, NH, where Hal was stationed in the Air Force. Laura worked at the Portsmouth Montgomery Ward store until they moved back to Longview in 1968. Laura and Hal had two children, Jeff and Gary. Oh, how special they are! Gary’s death on May 20, 2018, was difficult. Faith saw us through it.

Laura was a homemaker and always had a special place in her heart for children having started to babysit at age 11 and enjoyed it so much—Sunday school teaching and daycare in the home. The delight in a child’s eye always caught her interest. Crafts? Everywhere; knitting, crocheting, beading and embroidery filled the hours. Lap robes, quilts and needlepoint pictures all went out the door to various people as presents. Laura was always an active Lutheran. It centered her life, gave her purpose and vision. She was very active at Trinity Lutheran Church in Longview.

She leaves behind her wonderful husband of 53 years, Hal; son Jeff; sisters Nancy Kynaston and Judy (Neil) Keever; and a large extended family of cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Arne and Maurine Peterson, brother David Peterson and son Gary Mahnke.

Services will be held Trinity Lutheran Church, 2021 Washington Way, Longview, on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, you may give to Trinity Lutheran Church or Community House on Broadway, 1105 Broadway, Longview.
