Dec. 2, 1933 — March 5, 2019
Joan Holbrook, 85, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2019, in Longview.
She was born Dec. 2, 1933, to Mabel and Sparks Nesmith. She and her twin sister, June graduated from Kelso High School in 1952. She married Gilbert “Squeak” Holbrook in 1954 and lived in Longview for what seems like forever.
Joan had a zest for life and embraced it. She made a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was extremely outgoing and was quite vocal most of the time — okay, all the time. A new friend was never far away.
Joan was technically savvy, until she got her first laptop and IPhone. She used to watch MTV to stay “hip” and be able to communicate with the young people. She was always the center of attention, and even held the family record for most embarrassing moments. Our favorites: “The Fruit Room” and “The Tooth.”
Although she had no professional training she was a fabulous tap dancer. Joan would tell you she was a pretty good bridge player (Silver Life Master). She was also an avid golfer, playing for 50 years at the Longview Country Club and in numerous tournaments.
Joan enjoyed many other things: QVC, gin, KFC, family vacations, Jeopardy, crows, cruises with dear friends, walking the lake, squirrels, Spam, HSN, trips to Florida and Arizona, geese, canned chili, the Golf Channel, onions, Evine, breakfast with the girls, and much more.
All Joan ever really wanted was just 10 more minutes.
We all love and miss her so much!
She was preceded in death by a sister, June Shermer; her husband Squeak; a son-in-law, Joe McLaughlin; and her parents.
Joan is survived by her five incredible children, mostly Mark Holbrook (Karla), and then Lisa McLaughlin, Kurt Holbrook (Cathy), Cynthia St. Jean (Bill), and Jennifer Holbrook (T); nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Joan’s life is planned from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Longview Country Club.
