Janet Darlene Basom

Sept. 29, 1935 — Sept. 1, 2018

Janet Darlene Basom entered into the loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ and eternal peace on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018, at the Hospice Care Center with her family by her side. She was 82 years old.

Janet was born Sept. 29, 1935, the daughter of the late Clyde Yarger and Olive Neuschwander. Janet attended Olympia High School and Lower Columbia College. She married the late Marcus Scott Basom on Oct. 4, 1953, and together they raised their family in Port Angeles, Othello, and Longview, Wash. They lived and loved their family, friends, and community beside each other for over 56 years.

Janet worked as a private piano teacher in Longview for 39 years and taught numerous children and adults the love of music. She was a lifelong member of Northlake Baptist Church where she played piano for 47 years. Janet played for services, celebrations, memorials, choirs, plays, and the Lower Columbia Community Singers in the 1970’s. She was also a member, secretary, and treasurer of Cowlitz County Chapter of the Washington State Music Teachers Association, a Boy Scout den mother, Brownie and Girl Scout leader, deaconess at Northlake Baptist Church, SW Youth Symphony board member, Longview Christian Reading tutor, and a community concert volunteer.

Janet was a prayer warrior, encouraged others with her music, a kind and thoughtful conversation, or a note she timely sent throughout her extended family and church family.

She loved gardening, canning, and flowers with dahlias always being present in her landscape. She deeply loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Janet traveled with her husband all over the USA, Europe, Israel, and especially enjoyed Hawaii, taking three trips in her life with the last trip in December 2015.

She could always find strength, understanding, and found the ability to give unconditional love even in the most distressing situations. Janet was a strong and loving soul who loved game and movie nights, holidays and celebrating her family’s birthdays which were always revered as a priority and important family events.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Marcus “Nick” Basom in May 2010 and continued to love him through to eternity; her grandmothers, Myrtle Martin and Rosalie DesJardin; her parents, Clyde and Olive; and two siblings, Neal Yarger and Marc Yarger.

She leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her children, Mike Basom, Don Basom, and Julie Miller (Doug), all of Longview; her grandchildren, Krista Miller (Derek) of Newberg, Ore., and William McCormick (Sandra), Kimberly Hort (Teek), Marcus Miller, and Janae Poindexter (Dustin), all of Longview; four great-grandchildren, Jade Reid Miller, Holden Poindexter, Owen Hort, and Olivia Miller; a brother, Scott Yarger (Sue) of Olympia, Wash.; and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families.

A celebration of Janet’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at Northlake Baptist Church, 2614 Ocean Beach Hwy., in Longview.
