Longtime Rainier resident Iola “Dolly” Pfaff passed away Dec. 30 at the Hospice Care Center.
She was born in Helena, Mont., on Feb. 2, 1919, to Peter and Iva (Hostetter) Dietrich. Iola married Harold E. Hadaway in 1939. They lived in Beaver, Ore., Juneau, Alaska for three years (then known as Territory of Alaska), before moving back to Lebanon, Ore.
In the late 1940s she opened her own commercial laundry in the basement of her home in Astoria, Ore. It was known as “Dolly’s Home Laundry.”
In 1952 she married William H. Pfaff and the family relocated to the Rainier area. She belonged to the Rainier Garden Club, Fern Hill Grange and The Nativity of The Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church. She loved her flower garden, supplying roses for her church was vitally important to her in the summer. Each winter she gathered greens and made wreaths, swags and cemetery crosses. She took tremendous pride in this effort.
She is survived by two daughters, Darlene Ollila of Rainier and Caroline Fittro of Longview; a son, James “Jim” Hadaway of Longview; nine grandchildren 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Randall “Randy” Pfaff in 1982; a brother, John Dietrich in 1995; and her husband, Wm. “Bill” Pfaff in 1999.
A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, on East 2nd and “D” streets, in Rainier.
