Sept. 21, 1920 — July 11, 2018
It’s hard to be filled with sorrow when you are overwhelmed with gratitude.
Helen Lucille Newhall passed away July 11, 2018, peacefully at her home with family and friends surrounding her.
Helen was born Sept. 21, 1920, in Centralia, Wash., the youngest of nine children. Helen weighed less than two pounds at birth and was placed in a shoe box by a wood stove for survival. That spirit followed her for the next 97-plus years. There are a few people who can boast the positive attitude she held. She was her own best coach in tough times. She talked to herself saying, “Come on Helen, you can do this!” That positive attitude came in handy for everything, from getting moving in the morning to improving her golf swing.
She graduated from Washington State University and was a big Cougs fan to the very end. It was at WSU she met her future husband and love of her life, Robert Eugene “Bob” Newhall. They were married Sept. 25, 1945, in Florida.
Helen truly loved her family and made sure they knew it. Her family included three sons, two daughters, eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Family time is what Helen loved the most. Nothing made her happier than having a house full of kids, kid’s friends, relatives, neighbors and whoever else just showed up. There was always room for one more.
Friends and family will remember Helen for her tenacity to get things done. She simply could fix or repair anything. She will also be remembered for her kindness, giving nature and her love for animals. This was especially true with her dog Milo who was always with her until the very end.

Helen and Bob loved the island of Kauai and shared that love with their children. For Christmas in 1973 they all went to Kauai.
They had a fabulous time, but on the flight home the Kukui nut necklace that she was given as a gift started cracking and breaking into pieces. She got home, got the glue out and put that necklace back together as good as new.
Volunteering at the Toutle River Thrift Store and golfing were two of Helen’s favorite past times. She and Bob were members of the Country Club for over 50 years and in 1981 Helen was the women’s champion.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents, sisters, brothers and a grandson, Joe.
She is survived by three sons, Greg Newhall (Laurie) of Ellensburg, Wash., Jim Newhall in Thailand, and Ross Newhall (LeAnn) of Longview; two daughters, Lee Doehne(Randy) in Castle Rock, and Carol Lecker (Rick) of Longview; 10 grandchildren, Trina, Jessica, Brad, Ryan, Jeff, Carlee, Jodi, Derrick, Miranda, and Sarah; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Helen’s life is planned from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Longview Country Club. Wearing your favorite Hawaiian or golf attire is encouraged.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Toutle River Thrift Store (Link Program), Hospice or the Humane Society.
