Harold E. Chase, 90, of Longview died Jan. 12, 2019, at the Hospice Care Center.
He was born to William Aquilla and Martha (Rappe’) Chase in Newport, Ore. He attended schools in Newport and Dayton, Ore. He was a resident of Cowlitz County since 1948, coming to Longview in 1953 from Woodland and La Center, Wash.
He and Mary L. Clees were married Sept. 26, 1948, in La Center. He worked for Freeman & Groves Logging in Ariel, Wash., then for Columbia Veneer, and Pope & Talbot for 29 years. He operated Harold’s Yard & Tree Service in Longview until 2002.
Harold enjoyed building and remodeling his home, working in his workshop, visiting with family and friends and dancing. He was a part the work bunch at his church and the FISH program. He was a member of the Longview Community Church and Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Merry Mixers Dance Club and the Cowlitz County Good Sam Club.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Billy, Daniel and Lawrence Chase; and a great-granddaughter, Symantha Turner.
He is greatly missed and survived by his wife of 70 years, Mary Chase at home; a son and daughter-in-law, Harold Jr., and Rhonda Chase of Newman Lake, Wash.; three daughters, Sharleen Smith of Vancouver, and Charlotte Peterson and Jean Chase, both of Longview; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alegra Plaisted of Los Angeles and Alice Cook of McMinnville, Ore.; and a brother, David Chase of Coos Bay, Ore.
Harold organized an old-time gospel sing and created a songbook of his favorite songs. These songbooks will be available at the service for anyone who wishes to share these favorites with him. A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 2218 E. Kessler Blvd., in Longview with Pastor Dave Martin officiating. Private interment will take place at Longview Memorial Park.
