Evelyn May Whitney 89, of Longview peacefully passed away on June 4, 2020. Evelyn was beloved by her family and caregivers at Tender Life Estate in Vancouver. She was so sweet, always had a smile for everyone she met. Evelyn was born on April 10, 1931 in Tacoma to Noah and Eva (White) Dixon. Evelyn, her parents and siblings were part of the Tacoma Deaf community. Evelyn attended and graduated in 1950 from the Washington State School for the Deaf in Vancouver. It was there she learned her passion for cooking, creative knitting and sewing.
While at WSD Evelyn met the “Love of her Life” Donald. They were married on June 19, 1954 in Tacoma, together they started their new life in Longview. They were happily married for 58 years before Donald passed. Evelyn worked and retired after 20 years at Applied Industries Inc. for the Handicapped in Longview in 1998.
She was a member of several Deaf Clubs and Leagues in Vancouver and Longview. Evelyn and Donald attended many family reunions, traveled by RV, and took unforgettable cruises after their retirement.
Evelyn is survived by daughters Arleen (David) Goedert of Longview, Cindy Smolinski of Swartz Creek, MI, son Edward (Maggie) Whitney of Shelton, WA, nine Grandchildren, five plus one more due in November Great Grandchildren, Sister-in Law Peggy Dixon of Tacoma, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Evelyn was proceeded in dealth by her loving husband, parents, sister; Shirley Johnson, brother; Robert Dixon, sister-in laws, brother-in-laws and nephews.
We love you Mom and are sad you are gone, but we are happy to know you at peace now. Mom and Dad are together again in Heaven. There will be no service at this time. Please make your memorial contribution to WSD, DEAF, and WSDDA or to your favorite charity to remember Evelyn.
