Sept. 29, 1923 — Dec. 23, 2018
Elizabeth Rose Young was born Sept. 29, 1923, to Hungarian immigrants, Joseph and Rosi Wagonhoffer. Betty was the fifth of six children, one of the “Wagonhoffer sisters.” Betty graduated from Kelso High School in 1941, and was a song queen.
Betty met Don Young while working as a telephone operator. They married when he returned from service in the Air Force in 1947.
Betty was a life-time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Kelso. She enjoyed family gatherings on their property in Rose Valley along the Coweeman River, hosting holiday dinners, watching her soap operas and daily walks along the Coweeman dike. On her 80th birthday it was computed that she walked over 17,000 miles on the dike.
Betty passed Dec. 23, 2018, the last of her generation of the Wagonhoffer clan.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Don in 1996; a grandson, Scott Gaffi; four sisters, Ann Jones (Jake), Mary Heath (Ron), Margaret Callison (Paul), and Kathryn McGhee (Dale); and a brother, Joe.
She is survived by three children, Jack Young (Jean) of Cambridge Spring, Pa., Jill Gaffi of Portland, and Jon Young (Lanny) of Longview; six grandchildren, Jennifer Vandersall, Jason Young, Janel Petrilli, Kim Gaffi, Tim Gaffi, and Travis Young; and seven great-grandchildren.
Private burial will take place at Saint Francis Xavier Cemetery in Toledo.
