Loving husband, father, grandfather and friend Dean A. Johnson, 90, of Kelso passed away Jan. 2, 2019, at the Hospice Care Center.
He was born Nov. 13, 1928, in Bemidji, Minn., to Walter and Ruth (Conditt) Johnson, and graduated from Bemidji High School. He married Carol Kolken in Bemidji in 1950. They had a daughter, before Carol passed away in 1954. Dean married Shirley Bahr in 1957.
Dean served in the Navy aboard the USS Osmus, an air craft carrier destroyer escort. He was an electrician with Local 48 for 69 years. He spent several years with Whiterock Electric, and worked on paper machines for Fibre and Weyerhaeuser, before retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the Lions, Elks and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dean enjoyed fishing, hunting, cutting firewood, camping, wintering in Lake Havasu, Ariz., and a multitude of family gatherings.
Dean is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley Johnson at home; four daughters, Sandra Kessler (Gary) of Toutle, Sheila Manes (Allen) of Ariel, Wash., Diane Libby (Jeff) of Long Beach, Wash., and Peg Swanson (Erik) of Rainier; a brother, Curt Johnson of Kelso; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Howard, Clare, Lawrence and Donald; and two sisters, Norma and Audrey.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Jan. 18 at St. Mary Catholic Church, 120 Powell Road, in Castle Rock. Father Bryan Ochs will officiate.
