David (Dave) J. Jeitz

May 5, 1934—November 9, 2019

Born May 5, 1934 to Paul and Beatrice Jeitz, David (Dave) J. Jeitz 85, was the youngest of five children. In ?1941?, Dave started school at the old Columbia Valley Gardens elementary school as a first-grader. He attended Junior High at the old Kessler school. Dave graduated from R.A. Long High School in 1952 and attended Lower Columbia College. While at LCC, he drove school bus part time for Longview School District. He earned his Bachelor’s degree from Western Washington College of Education and his Master’s degree from the University of Oregon.

In 1956, he married Shirley Morris and they had two children. Dave began teaching 6th grade at the old Kessler school. He taught at Robert Gray Elementary and became the Vice Principal, and later Principal at Monticello Junior High. He was the Principal of Cascade Middle School when he retired. In the 1960’s, he was instrumental in starting the first Head Start program in Longview and became the first director. He retired from the Longview School District after 31 years, in 1987.

After retirement, he and Shirley moved to Mesa, Arizona, where they golfed every other day for close to 25 years. He enjoyed salmon fishing and spending time on their boat. In September 2014, they returned to Longview.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Lawrence Jeitz, sisters Elizabeth (Betty) Pannell, Phyllis Jeitz, Beverly McCoy, son Randy, daughter Sally Martine and his little dog, Sam. Dave is survived by Shirley, his wife of 63 years, his brother in law Jim (Kathy) Morris of Longview and several nieces and nephews. At Dave’s request, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers he requested contributions be made to the animal shelter of your choice in his memory.
