1965 — 2018
After a short illness, Rainier resident Cathy Mason passed away peacefully at home Oct. 27th.
Cathy was born in Portland, to James and Joan Mason. She grew up in Rainier being a big sister, a swimmer, and a runner, and graduated from Rainier High School in 1983. She attended Southern Oregon College in Ashland and the University of Oregon in Eugene.
On a college summer break, she traveled to SE Alaska to work in a cannery and fell in love with the natural beauty of, and way of life in, Petersburg, Alaska, where she eventually moved and made her home for 18 years. She was a social worker for native tribes and the State of Alaska. She made her home overlooking the Wrangell Narrows outside of Petersburg with her husband, Ralph and her dogs and other pets. She enjoyed cooking, walking her dogs, fishing, and crafting.
In 2008 she moved back to Rainier and used her caregiving skill to care for her mom, Joan, who’d been diagnosed with cancer. She then became the caregiver for her father, Jim, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2011. She was employed as a caregiver for Anderson Adult Foster Homes at the time of her illness. Throughout her working life, she cared deeply for those she served.
A celebration of Cathy’s life is planned for 1 p.m. Nov. 10 at Rainier United Methodist Church.
She was predeceased by her father, James A. Mason. She is survived by her mother, Joan Mason of Longview; a sister, Linda Mason of Olympia; a brother, Jim Mason of Hood River, Ore.; and her nieces and nephews, Ellison and Grant Johnson, and Henry and Sylvie Mason.
Donations in Cathy’s memory may be made to the Oregon Humane Society.
