April 10, 1945 — Jan. 18, 2019
Carol J. Carlson, 73, of Longview passed away Jan. 18, 2019.
She was born April 10, 1945, in Astoria, to Henry Sven and Francis (Luukinen) Longberg. Carol graduated from Astoria High School in 1963 and earned a bachelor of science degree in 1969 from the University of Oregon, where she was a member of Alpha Delta Phi.
Carol worked for the Astoria School District from 1974 to 1987 as head secretary and assistant to the high school athletic director. She then accepted a position at LCC where she was a driving force behind the Red Devil Athletic Program. She served as program manager under three athletic directors over the course of her career. Carol was a huge sports enthusiast and loved her job. She retired in 2011 and received the Dutch Triebwasser Award for outstanding athletic administrator. In 2016 she was inducted into the NWAC Hall of Fame and in 2017 the LCC Hall of Fame.
She enjoyed jazz festivals and cruises with her long-time friends, but her passion was college level sports, whether she was attending an Oregon Ducks football game, a college baseball game or keeping stats for the college, she found joy in athletics.
Carol was genuinely one of a kind. She never felt the need to sugar coat anything. She was fun and outgoing and brutally honest. She was loyal to those she loved and an irreplaceable friend.
Carol is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Clint Edward and Jodi Maxine Carlson of Knappa, Ore., and Brad Victor and Leihanna Dawn Carlson of Cathlamet; five grandchildren, Sophia Maxine Carlson of Knappa and Beau Carlson, Brody Carlson, Courtney Carlson and Cooper Carlson, all of Cathlamet; and many friends, including Donna Mary Dulich, and David and Susan Romppanen
A celebration of Carol’s life is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 at LCC in the Paul Loftman Auditorium.
Contributions may be made to the Carol Carlson Memorial Athletic Scholarship Fund, in care of the LCC Foundation, 1600 Maple St., Longview, WA 98632.
