Three dead whales have washed up on the Oregon coast over the past week

WARRENTON — A baby gray whale washed up on the northern Oregon coast on Wednesday, making it the third dead whale to beach on the state’s coastline over the past week.

The 12-foot-long calf washed ashore at Fort Stevens State Park, KGW reported, only 100 yards from the site where a dead sperm whale beached over the weekend.

The baby whale appeared to be a stillborn, Michael Milstein, spokesperson for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fisheries agency, told the news outlet. There were no indications that it was struck by a ship or that it died from human interaction.

Federal biologists determined that the 40-foot sperm whale that washed ashore nearby died after a ship hit it. The whale had a large gash in its side.

Name of Seattle officer in crash that killed woman released

Police have released the name of a police officer who was responding to a medical call when his patrol SUV hit and killed a woman last week in a Seattle crosswalk. Seattle Police Department Detective and spokesperson Judinna Gulpan confirmed in an email to The Associated Press Monday that the officer is Kevin Austin Dave. Gulpan did not answer questions about whether Dave is back on patrol and said police are still exploring what, if any, additional details they can release. Police say Dave was responding to an urgent call in a patrol vehicle on Jan. 23 when 23-year-old Jaahnavi Kandula was was hit. Seattle traffic police are investigating.

Police shoot, kill man suspected in Oregon armed robbery

Police say officers shot and killed a 27-year-old man after responding to reports of an alleged armed robbery and carjacking in a Walmart parking lot in Salem, Oregon. Oregon State Police say police responding to the initial calls at about 9 a.m. then received information that the man, later identified as Michael Compton, tried to steal another vehicle in a different parking lot and fled on foot. Police say responding officers chased Compton to an auto parts store parking lot where officers fatally shot Compton after Compton fired a gun at them during a confrontation. No officers were injured. Oregon State Police are investigating.

Man accused of trying to kidnap Washington barista arrested

Police in Washington state have arrested a man accused of trying to abduct a barista from a suburban Seattle coffee shop. Video released by Auburn police shows a man in a truck at about 5 a.m. Monday trying to pull a woman through a coffee shop window using a looped zip tie. Video shows the woman breaking free of the man, shutting the window and him then driving away. Police spokesperson Kolby Crossley told The Seattle Times that a large number of community tips helped identify a suspect and he was arrested Tuesday. Police declined to say exactly where the incident happened.

Man accused of killing Washington cop asks to move trial

A man accused of killing a police officer in Washington state is asking a judge to move his trial out of county where the officer was fatally shot last year. The Daily Herald reports that in a motion filed last week in Snohomish County Superior Court, Richard Rotter’s public defender argues an outpouring of support for Everett Police Officer Dan Rocha and news coverage could prejudice jurors. Prosecutor Craig Matheson declined to comment to the newspaper on the motion. A hearing is set for Feb. 17 to discuss the issue. Rotter remains in the Snohomish County Jail on a no bail hold.
