Toutle Lake volleyball’s goal was to make it to the second day of the Class 2B State Tournament at the Yakima Valley SunDome. The Ducks can check that off the list.

TL responded to a first-round defeat to perennial power Colfax on Thursday with a win over Tonasket to secure another game, Friday at 8 a.m. against Kittitas. The Ducks need a win in that to fight for a trophy later in the afternoon.

Against Colfax, the Ducks “just came out not ready to go,” coach Don Merzoian said, and fell 25-8, 25-11, 25-15. Sienna Rudd and Mahayla Kruse had 100 percent serving, with Kruse adding 12 digs.

Against Tonasket, the Ducks won 25-17, 25-12, 27-25. Taylor Gould had 16 assists and six aces, Casey Wentz had four aces and 12 digs, Rudd had 11 assists, Nikarra Smith had nine kills, Kaylee Florek had 10 kills and Kruse had 24 digs.

Kalama goes 1-1: Kalama topped La Conner for the second straight year in the state tournament, winning 25-14, 25-19, 25-19 in the first round before falling to Northwest Christian, of Colbert, 25-20, 25-18, 25-23.

The Chinooks will play Mossyrock/Brewster in a loser-out game at 9:45 a.m. Friday. They need a win to fight for a fifth-place trophy later in the afternoon.

TRC splits: Three Rivers Christian had a long day. The Eagles fell to Odessa 14-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-12 in the first round before responding with a five-set thriller over Wilson Creek.

TRC won the loser-out game Thursday 26-24, 25-22, 22-25, 22-25, 15-11 to advance to the second day, when they’ll face Selkirk in an elimination game at 8 a.m. TRC needs a win to fight for the seventh-place trophy.
