And then there were 16 ... for six different classifications.

The state has whittled down the field, and all that's left are the participants in the regional round of the state basketball tournament. Dates and locations of the games were announced Sunday. Here's a look at the matchups as well as a few quick observations:

* Can lose for winning: The Toledo boys and Woodland girls win their district tournaments and are rewarded with the likes of sixth-ranked University Prep and ninth-ranked Blaine, respectively, in the regional round. Not exactly a red carpet to Yakima. The Mark Morris boys received similar treatment, albeit to a lesser degree, with their Southwest 2A District title translating into a regional matchup with Sehome of the mighty Northwest Conference. Never fun seeing an NWC team in the opposing layup line.

* Parting gift: On the other side of that coin, the Woodland boys get their hearts broken in the Southwest 1A District final by Conner Vermilyea and the Merzoian magic, but come away smelling like roses with a beatable Cascade Christian team the only thing standing between them and the Palm Springs of Washington. Not a bad booby prize for the Beavs.

* Odds and ends: The Kalama girls get Cascade Christian, the 10th-ranked Nisqually League champions in their regional matchup. Will the Cougars recover from their 37-point district playoff loss to Lynden Christian in time to beat back the on-the-rise Chinooks? ... The Kalama boys' matchup looks to be a bit tougher against ninth-ranked Cedar Park Christian of Bothel, but very winnable all the same. ... Pity Renton having to face the Mark Morris girls after that bitter defeat at the hands of W.F. West. .... The Wahkiakum girls draw third-ranked Bear Creek after an upset loss at the hands of Napavine on Saturday. Yikes. ... Start searching Orbitz Ducks fans. The Toutle Lake girls figure to be heavy favorites against off-the-radar Orcas Island at 12-11.

Here are the regionals for classifications that still have area teams participating. Unfortunately, not all records were available. The rest of he pairings can be found here:
