No matter the sport, coaches always preach how hard it is to beat a team three times in a year. Toledo boys’ basketball learned that the hard way.
The Central 2B League champions topped Toutle Lake twice during the regular season but got walloped 70-46 in the Southwest 2B District Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday in Montesano.
Cam Swanson dropped 25 points for the Ducks, who also got 12 points from Nate Hoff. Toutle Lake jumped to a 34-15 halftime lead and never trailed.
Reece Wallace finished with 26 points for the Indians, who face Chief Leschi in a loser-out game on Monday. Toutle Lake plays Napavine in the district semifinals on Tuesday at Kelso High School.
Naselle 72, Firm Foundation 39: The Comets forced 20 first-half turnovers, got out to a 42-13 lead and clinched a regional berth on Saturday in Ilwaco. Antonio Nolan finished with 14 points, Donny Edwards added 12, Kolby Glenn finished with 11 points and Cole Dorman tallied 10.
“We came out sharp and played well,” Naselle coach Brian Macy said. “We played great defense in the first half and that was kind of the story of the game.”
Naselle advances to Saturday’s Southwest 1B District Championship, slated for 6 p.m. at Montesano.
Life Christian 44, Toledo 26: Kal Schaplow tallied seven points and Anna Tauscher chipped in six more but the Indians fell in the Southwest 2B District Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday in Montesano.
The Indians got behind 25-12 at the half and a 19-3 third-quarter advantage from the Eagles pushed Toledo into the consolation bracket, where they’ll face South Bend on Monday.
Ilwaco 74, Mossyrock 41: The Fishermen advanced into the Southwest 2B District Tournament semifinals with a dominating win over the Vikings on Saturday in Montesano.
Eliza Bannister finished with 27 points, Makenzie Kaech added 18 points and 10 rebounds and Madeline Jacobson finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
It sets up a rematch with Wahkiakum in the district semifinals. That game is slated for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Kelso High.
Taholah 44, Naselle 37: The Comets’ season came to a close with the loss in the Southwest 1B District Tournament on Saturday in Ilwaco. No other information was reported.
Southwest 2A District at Dick Mealy Memorial Pool: Mark Morris’ relay teams had a great day at the District meet Saturday with two second place finishers who qualified for state.
Placing were the 200 medley relay of Kaden Schafer, Dawson Dang, Samuel Mendez and Tyler Pospichal (1:53.73), the 400 freestyle team of Brian Franklin, Pospichal, Dawson Dang and Kodee Soetamin, (3:34.35), and Dang in the 100 yard breast stroke (1:08.10).
Mark Morris placed second with 294 points behind Columbia River’s 315.
Southwest 3A District at Gaither Pool: Kelso earned the district title with 338 points on Saturday.
Jake Laes won the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.55), and was second in the 100 freestyle (51.27). Also placing second were Drake Lehto (100 breaststroke, 1:11.22), Grant Eastham (100 backstroke, 59.61), Jacob Redmill (50 freestyle, 23.49), and the 200 free relay of Redmill, Cole Farley, Clay Downing and Laes (1:37.59).
