Jordyn Dole and Alexis Kleven combined for 29 points, but the Lassies came out on the wrong end of a 65-45 decision to Bethel in a quarterfinal game of the West Central/Southwest 3A Bi-District Tournament held Friday at Rogers High School in Puyallup.
Kelso (13-9) plays Bonney Lake in a loser-out matchup at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday at Clover Park High School. Second-ranked Bethel (20-2) lost its two games to top-ranked Lincoln.
“We came out with a decent first quarter,” Kelso coach Jennifer Hamilton said. “They used a 3-2 fullcourt press from start to finish, and we had a season-high 25 turnovers.”
Kelso trailed 17-10 after the first quarter, and was outscored 18-4 in the pivotal second quarter.
“They were making steals and we couldn’t handle the pressure,” Hamilton said. “We were able to cut their lead to 14 in the third quarter.”
W.F. West 88, Woodland 35: The Beavers fell victim to the state favorite’s in-your-face, high-paced style of play on Friday, dropping the Southwest 2A District Opener. The Beavers will play Centralia at Mark Morris High School on Monday in a loser-out game.
“They just imposed their will on us,” coach Glen Flanagan said. “They’re pretty good.”
Woodland (12-9) shot 20-22 from the free-throw line and was paced by Payten Foster’s 14 points.
Southwest 2A District Championships: Mark Morris moved 17 swimmers, and R.A. Long pushed through a pair into the championship finals after the first day of the meet held Friday at Dick Mealy Memorial Pool.
The top six placers in each event advance into today’s finals, with the next six moving into the consolation finals. The top two placers in each event of the championship finals, along with swimmers who achieved state-qualifying times advance to the 2A State Swimming Championships Feb. 16-17 at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.
In the 200-yard freestyle, MM’s Andrew MacDonnell qualified fourth (2 minutes, 5.28 seconds), and Tyler Pospichal fifth (2:05.31). In the 200 individual medley, Kaden Schafer was third (2:22.43), Dawson Dang fourth (2:27.99), and Zackary Butler fifth (2:32.88). Kodee Soetamin (23.39) and Brian Franklin (23.63) were 3-4 in the 50 freestyle, Ryan Pospichal was fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.43), and Tyler Pospichal (1:02.93) and Kaden Schafer (1:03.95) finished 5-6 in the 100 backstroke.
In the 100 free, Soetamin (50.86) was second and Franklin (52.61) fifth, and in the 100 breaststroke, Ryan Pospichal (1:10.86), Dawson Dang (1:11.59) and Butler (1:15.37) finished 2-3-6. MacDonnell (5:30.35) was third in the 500 free, and Samuel Mendez (5:40.51) placed fourth.
RAL’s Michael Webster was fifth in the 500 free in 6:02.68, and Peter Morris was sixth in the 200 free in 2:08.99.
