Lower Columbia College stayed hot at the plate with a combined 20 hits in an NWAC West Region baseball sweep of Pierce at Mount Tahoma High School on Saturday in Tacoma.
Second-ranked LCC (25-5, 12-1 region) took the opener 9-7, and claimed the nightcap 7-2. The Red Devils, winners of their last 10 games, remain tied atop the West Region standings with Tacoma. The Titans swept Grays Harbor, also on Saturday.
“We had a lot of good offensive performances from a number of guys,” LCC coach Eddie Smith said.
In the nightcap, LCC trailed 2-1 going into the seventh inning when it exploded for six runs. The big hits were a two-run triple from Trevor Huddleston, and an RBI double by JT Strickler.
The Devils collected nine hits. Kyle Sandstrom was 2-4 with a double, and Jordan Barchus added an RBI triple. Jared Akin allowed six hits and struck out one through five innings, and Huddleston tossed two innings of one-hit relief for the win.
In the opener, LCC scored early and often. The Red Devils scored twice in the first, third and sixth innings, and plated three runs in the eighth. Sandstrom had three of the Devils’ 11 hits including a double, and Strickler had a solo homer, double and two RBIs. Ricky Muzzy slapped a double and had two RBIs, and Huddleston added a double.
Nick Tabura allowed three hits through six innings for the win. Anthony Garcia gave up four hits in two relief innings, and Huddleston tossed a one-hit ninth inning for the save.
Red Devils split: Christine Robbins belted solo homers in each game as Lower Columbia College split with Mount Hood in NWAC South Region play at Heerensperger Field on Saturday at Tam O’Shanter Park.
LCC (11-9, 9-7 region) dropped the opener 10-5, but took the nightcap 1-0.
Mount Hood used a three-run sixth inning to build a 8-3 lead.
The Red Devils had seven hits. Aurora Gouley also hit a solo homer, Jessica Gibson had two hits, Cheyanne Gilbertson added two hits including a double, and Myranda Krull chipped in an RBI double.
Robbins scattered 11 hits and struck out one through six innings, and Taylor Brooks tossed a three-hit seventh inning with a strikeout.
In the nightcap, Robbins had her solo blast in the sixth inning. Hood got a two-out triple in the top of the seventh, but left the baserunner stranded.
Robbins and Bailey Hockett had two hits apiece as LCC finished with seven hits. Gibson allowed seven hits and struck out four in the win.
Kalama’s Alexis Sabo played first base in the nightcap for Mount Hood, going 0 for 3.
Toutle Lake 8, Toledo 2: Zach Vetter allowed seven hits and struck out six as the Ducks claimed a Central 2B League victory on Saturday in Toutle.
TL (8-4, 8-3 league) scored all the runs they needed in the second inning on an RBI double from Logan Grabenhorst, and a pair of runs on passed balls.
The Ducks had six hits, and Devin Hooper had two including a double and scored twice, and Grabenhorst scored twice.
For Toledo (3-11, 2-8 league), Gage Madill had two of the Indians’ seven hits.
