BEND, Ore. — Warm Springs police say a 5-year-old boy fatally shot himself last week.

Police Chief Carmen Smith told Bend station KTVZ that Corbin Ike and his brother were with a baby sitter last Thursday night and began playing with their father's gun safe.

Smith says the safe had an electronic lock, but the boys somehow punched in the right code to open it. The 5-year-old took out a loaded handgun and accidentally shot himself in the head.

I feel very sorry for this family. That poor little boy. :( Yet, this is why I don't allow guns in my household. My children couldn't possibily understand how dangerous a gun is.

Speechless.........there is no cure to kids being accidently killed by guns then to not have them in the house. This is an ongoing argument in my home. :-(

First and foremost, My thoughts and prayers are with the family. This is truely a tragic event, that could of been prevented. With that being said, Where was the baby sitter? Should she be charged with neglect? As for the Anti-gun people, there are precautions that I have not seen in this story, and hope this thread doesn't turn into a Anti-gun post. This should really be about the supervision that led to the opening of a locked safe.

    Just my thoughts.
