Thunderstorms in the forecast will extend road closures on SR-503 near Speelyai Bay Road east of Woodland this week for a couple of hours Thursday.

Washington State Department of Transportation began performing rock blasting work Tuesday on a rock face that became unstable last winter off of State Route 503 near Speelyai Bay Road.

According to WSDOT spokeswoman Tamara Greenwell, the blast was performed slightly after 12 p.m., and SR 503 was able to be reopened by 1:15 p.m.

Although there was a planned road closure Wednesday from noon to 2 p.m., Greenwell said thunderstorms in the forecast caused WSDOT to cancel the blasting that day. Instead, they’ll extend their work on Thursday two hours, to make SR 503 closed from noon to 4 p.m. that day.

Travelers will have to use a detour route during the closure. When the roads reopen, traffic will continue to alternate through one lane of the highway until the project is complete. Additional intermittent closures will be scheduled as stabilization work continues.
