A month-over-month gain of 200 manufacturing jobs helped push Cowlitz County's October unemployment rate to 5.2 percent, the lowest October level ever recorded, state employment officials reported Tuesday.
Last month's jobless rate was almost two percentage points lower than a year earlier, when it was 7.1 percent in October 2016. This September's rate was 5.4 percent.
Over the past twelve months, county nonfarm employment increased by an estimated 1,800 jobs, a gain of 4.6 percent, according to the State Department of Employment Security. In that span, private sector employment was up 1,400 jobs, with gains in construction (100 jobs), manufacturing (500 jobs) and education and health services (100 jobs). Government employment was up 400 jobs, all at the state level. The trade, transportation and utilities sector declined by 100 jobs.
