At Brian Magnuson’s signal, Scott DeRosier dumps a load of rock Friday around the railroad tracks placed this week on the Longview Library lawn for the return of the restored 1924 Shay logging locomotive.

After the 48-ton engine is placed on the tracks next month, a timber and steel pavilion and wrought-iron fence will be built around it to protect the historic engine from weather and vandals.

Community members have donated $25,000 toward the pavilion, and a city parks grant will cover the remainder of the project’s estimated $75,000 cost.
