Cowlitz County sheriff's deputies arrested a Kelso man suspected of firing a bullet through his apartment floor on Saturday.
Chief Criminal Deputy Charlie Rosenzweig said John Robert Hopper, 49, had an argument with his girlfriend in their apartment in the 1800 block of West Side Highway. While the girlfriend was still somewhere in the apartment, Hopper went up to the second floor and accidentally discharged his pistol at around 3:45 p.m., Rosenzweig said.
The bullet blasted through the floor and into the first story of the apartment but did not injure anyone, Rosenzweig said. It was not immediately clear how deputies determined that the gunshot was accidental or where the girlfriend was at the time the shot went off.
When deputies arrived, Hopper wasn't present, but he drove up a few minutes later, Rosenzweig said. Deputies arrested him on suspicion of driving while intoxicated as well as reckless endangerment. Hopper was booked into the Cowlitz County Jail at 5:40 p.m.
