A Kelso man was arrested Saturday night after allegedly stealing a car, eluding police officers and fighting a police dog.
At 8:45 p.m., a woman reported that she took Ryan Kristopher Sherman, 34, to the 15th Avenue Safeway and left him in her Chevrolet TrailBlazer. When she returned, her vehicle and Sherman were gone, according to Sgt. Chris Blanchard.
Blanchard said officers found Sherman with the vehicle at the Ocean Beach Walmart. Sherman refused to follow orders to leave the car, even when officers used pepper spay and a PepperBall launcher, Blanchard said.
Afterwards, Sherman allegedly drove westbound on Ocean Beach Highway and ended up into the Coal Creek area, eventually stopping in a driveway. Blanchard said the chase never went above the speed limit.
Once officers confronted Sherman in the driveway, he fought with a police dog and officers until he was taken into custody at 9:35 p.m., Blanchard said.
After he was treated at St. John Medical Center, Sherman was booked into the Cowlitz County Jail on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, taking a motor vehicle without permission, resisting arrest and felony eluding. His bail is $4,000.
