All lanes of Interstate 5 in the Woodland area reopened following a brush fire that completely closed down both sides of the freeway at times Monday afternoon.
Backups extended for as much as 12 miles southbound and as far as La Center in the northbound lanes, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Cowlitz 1 Fire and Rescue and state Department of Natural Resources fire crews battled the fire, which broke out near Dike Access Road in the early afternoon. Periodic lane closures occurred, and the freeway was entirely shut down just before 2 p.m.
The cause of the fire was not immediately available.
