Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Deputy Todd McDaniel and Washington State Trooper William Knudson have been honored as the Longview American Legion Post No. 155’s officers of the year for those law enforcement agencies.

Each year the post celebrates law enforcement officers from several of the area’s local agencies for their community service, professionalism, letters of accommodation and heroism.

American Legion officials said McDaniel and Knudson were singled out especially for their public service.

McDaniel, who marked his 20-year anniversary with the sheriff’s office in 2013, is serving his third term on the Kelso City Council and is currently Mayor Pro Tem. He is also on the River Cities Transit board and has previously served on the board of Lower Columbia Head Start and as president of both Kelso Youth Baseball and Kelso Youth Football.

Knudson has been active in coaching local youth sports programs, including the Castle Rock/Toutle Lake Girl’s U12 Softball Team. He is a member of Washington State Patrol SWAT and has served as the officer in charge of the WSP Kelso detachment.

Knudson received a letter of recognition for volunteering to perform additional security duties during the extended Legislative session in Olympia in March and April. “He did a courageous job, serving the citizens of Washington, while protecting their right to express themselves through protest,” Knudson’s superiors wrote in a memo recommending him for the American Legion honor.

Way to go, officer McDaniel! The people of Kelso are proud of you, and we are certainly blessed to have such a fine, upstanding citizen represent us on the council. You are what we should all aspire to be--selfless!
