The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office has placed Deputy Matt Wallace on paid administrative leave after he shot and killed a Napavine man in Boistfort on Thursday morning, the agency announced Friday.

In addition, the Lewis County Coroner’s Office on Friday identified the man who was shot as Gregory S. Kaufman, 64.

Wallace, 37, shot Kaufman at a vehicle turnout along State Route 6 after he reportedly lunged out of a car and charged the deputy with a large knife, according to the sheriff’s office.

The deputy called for medical aid, and responders pronounced Kaufman dead shortly after arriving at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office.

Wallace is a nine-year veteran of the sheriff’s office. It is standard procedure to place officers involved in shootings on administrative leave while their actions are evaluated. The regional Sheriff’s Critical Incident Investigation team is investigating.
