May 2, 1940 — Nov. 19, 2017
Thomas H. Speed Sr., 77, passed away peacefully Nov. 19, 2017, at the Hospice Care Center, surrounded by his sister and brothers, his loving children and their families in a room filled with laughter, tears, music and football.
Tom was born May, 2, 1940 in Mt. City, Ga., to William H. and Mary Pauline (Rogers) Speed. He came to Kelso as a young boy and graduated from Woodland High School in 1959, were he excelled in sports and found his love of baseball.
Tom married Luella (Kasberg) Olson. They had five children, Julie Medack (Doug), Thomas H. Speed Jr., Jeff Speed (Diane), Callie Gieseke (Dave), and Sid Speed (Kim). Tom was preceded in death by his son, Tom Speed Jr.; a sister; three brothers; and his parents.
Tom drove truck all of his life, he would often tell his kids that he had driven backwards more than they had forward. He always had a story to tell and everyone knew they could always find him at “His Door” out back of the Canterbury Inn where he resided for the last four years.
We wish to thank his loving sister, Mickey (Speed) Townsend and his brothers, Jim and Charles Speed for being there for us through this difficult time, and always being there for him, you kept his spirits up with all the sibling bantering throughout the years.
A celebration of Tom’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Kelso-Longview Elks Club. If you would like to bring a potluck dish, it would be appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632.
