Beloved husband and father Robert Henry Stephenson, 88, of Longview passed away Sept. 28, 2017, at the Hospice Care Center.
He was born Aug. 4, 1929, in LaCrosse, Wis., to Henry Walter and Ruth (Hampton) Stephenson. The family moved to the local area when Bob was eight years old. He graduated from Kelso High School in 1948 and earned a degree in building code and fire prevention from Whittier College.
On Aug. 22, 1948, he married his high school sweetheart Lin M. Cook in Longview’s Trinity Lutheran Church.
Bob was a retired Longview firefighter, and served as city fire marshal for 25 years. He served in the Naval Reserves from 1949 to 1955 and was a member of the Kelso-Longview Elks, Three Rivers Golf Men’s Club, and a member of DeMolay International in his youth. He sang bass in an award winning barbershop quartet. Bob enjoyed snow skiing, water skiing, fishing, hunting, golfing and boat building. He made little water skis for his 6 year-old daughter who begged to ski too. Bob loved winters in Arizona, and traveling to the Bahamas, Tahiti and Hawaii.
He was quiet but friendly with a subtle, dry sense of humor. He could repair nearly anything and performed most of the remodeling on the family’s first home. Bob was a proud father who always supported his children’s well-being and activities.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Lin Stephenson at home; four children, Sandra Riley of Boise, Idaho, Debra Chase (Steve) of Longview, Robert Stephenson Jr. (Robin) of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Jennifer Sparks of Longview; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a 3 year-old brother, DeWayne Stephenson; and a son-in-law, Ryan Sparks.
The family will hold a private celebration of Bob’s life at a later date. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Steele Chapel and Bob’s ashes will be inurned at Longview Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632.
