Longtime local resident Richard Beisel, 85, of Longview passed away Nov. 20, 2017.
He was born Sept. 30, 1932, in Long Island City, N.Y., to Floyd and Mildred Beisel, and graduated from Long Island City High School in 1950. On Aug. 8, 1952, he married Frances Geerson. The next day they boarded a bus for Cowlitz County.
Dick retired from Longview Fibre in 1994 after 43 years with the company. He was helpful, caring, giving, and an active member of the community. Most Mondays Dick delivered Meals on Wheels with Skip Dunlap. He was a Cowlitz Little League umpire from 1958 to 1964. He loved all sports. Dick was an usher at St. Stephen’s Church as well as a vestry member, Eucharist minister, lay reader, Sunday school teacher and Chalice bearer. One of his greatest possessions was the Bishop’s Cross he was awarded for his service.
His greatest efforts were made with The Red Cross. Dick was a first aid-CPR instructor, blood drive chairman, regional blood board chairman, and emergency services member, volunteering in St. Croix, Virgin Island after Hurricane Marilyn in 1995 and in North Carolina after Hurricane Bertha in 1996. Dick was captain of the disaster aid team, chairman to the emergency services director, chairman to the health and safety director and elected to the State Service Council in 1999. This answers the question his grandchildren often asked, “Why is Grandpa always in charge?”
He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Frances Beisel at home; three children, Sheryl Lydon (Pat) of Kelso, Terri Karnofski (Dean) of Vancouver, and Ken Beisel (Carrie) of Longview; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his faithful companion, Shadow.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and a sister.
A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 1428 22nd Ave., in Longview. A reception will follow. The Rev. Richard Green and Mother Kathleen will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632 or American Red Cross of Southwest Washington, 3114 E Fourth Plain Blvd., Vancouver, WA 98661.
