Doug Berglund passed away at the Hospice Care Center and went to his home in Heaven Oct. 6, 2017.
He was born Feb. 7, 1941, in New Rockford, N.D., to Lloyd and Leona Berglund. The family moved to Longview in 1951. After graduating from R.A. Long High School in 1959, Doug worked for Weyerhaeuser in the technical center. He served in the Army from 1965 to 1967 and spent a year in Vietnam. He returned to college at Central Washington University, majoring in education and taught school for 30 years, 26 of those years at Monticello Middle School. He taught industrial arts and was a master craftsman in wood and metal. Doug could build almost anything and could fix everything from cars to kitchen appliances and anything in-between.
Doug loved camping trips with his family and friends over the years, especially those with his children and grandchildren. He took up golfing when he was in his 50s and enjoyed the sport very much in his retirement years. He and his wife, Bernice spent 16 winters in Mesa, Ariz., a perfect spot for him to enjoy golf and great weather.
Doug married his high school sweetheart, Bernice Wendling in 1963. They were blessed with two sons who survive him, Mark (Heather) in Longview and Greg (Ruby) in Vancouver. He is also survived by his wife, Bernice; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Karen Myklebust (Chuck); and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, and a sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Al Quick, preceded him in death.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lawrence Locke officiating. Private committal will take place at Longview Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Community Home Health & Hospice, P.O. Box 2067, Longview, WA 98632 or to the Grace Lutheran Church, 2725 Dover St., Longview, WA 98632.
