Cecil Ryan

April 6, 1938 — Feb. 28, 2018

Cecil “Beets” Ryan was born April 6, 1938, to Pearl and Ennis Ryan in Rainer, Ore., and died Feb. 28, 2018, at the Hospice Care Center.

He joined the Navy and served aboard the escort destroyer USS Leray Wilson on which he visited ports in New Zealand, Samoa, Japan, and Hong Kong. He always said Aukland had the most beautiful port. Cecil worked at a dynamite factory and glass plant before settling down to work at the Wauna Paper mill for over 35 years.

Cecil married Joyce Ann Womack on Aug. 15, 1964, at the Methodist Church in Rainier. Cecil and Joyce had two children, JoAnna and Brad. JoAnna married Chris Thompson and they had two daughters, Kylee and Quynn who quickly changed Cecil’s name to “Poppy.” Brad married Jolanta and they had two sons, Atlin and Elias. Elias has Poppy’s love of beets and fiery sense of humor which has earned him the nickname “Mini-Cecil.” Cecil loved to hunt and fish, and his trucks. When you asked him his favorite beer he would always say, ‘OP’ (Other Peoples).

Cecil is survived by a brother, Bill; a sister, Peggy; his wife, Joyce; and his children and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Rainier Rod and Gun Club. As Cecil always said, “You’re a gentleman and a scholar and there are damn few of us left.”
